As we reflect on the various images of the Christmas story, recalling to heart and mind the wondrous truth that God is with us (Emmanuel) may we also ponder the images of Mary and Jesus.

These images remind us of the ways God mothers us—how She cares for us, nurses us—Her compassion and grace freely flowing to us like milk from Mary’s breast. 

Mother God

God who gives birth

“You were unmindful of the Rock that bore you; you forgot the God who gave you birth.” Deuteronomy 32:18 

God as a comforting mother

“As a mother comforts her child, so I will comfort you; you shall be comforted in Jerusalem.” Isaiah 66:13

God compared to a nursing mother

“Can a woman forget her nursing child, or show no compassion for the child of her womb? Even these may forget, yet I will not forget you.” Isaiah 49:15 

Glory to God in the Highest!

Reflection Questions: Keeping in mind that God is spirit and that male and female images of God are each lacking and yet both helpful in helping us understand in part our infinite God—what is your comfort level re: referring to God as she as opposed to he? Why?
